OUR STATUTES
1. Mission
Workers’ Alliance aims to build the working class into an independent political force. We organize and mobilize the working class in workplaces and other spheres of social life to reclaim the tool of the political strike as a means to build the working class capacity to advance its interests.
2. Membership
Membership is open to anyone who, has attended at least one general meeting, and agrees with the principles, aims and strategy of Workers’ Alliance.
Members have a duty to participate in the basic work of workers alliance, which is workplace organizing, and to respect the general principles of Workers’ Alliance.
Members have the right to vote and stand for election, to attend meetings of their base organization and congresses, and to share their views at meetings.
If members participate on behalf of an organization (ex. a union local), they must have acquired a mandate to do so from said organization.
3. Dues
The membership dues for Workers’ Alliance members is $10 per month, which is remitted and administered by the executive of each regional chapter.
The regional chapter must remit 20% of its budget to the coordinating committee.
4. Basic bodies
The basic bodies of Workers’ Alliance are the industrial caucus and the regional chapter. The basic bodies are independent organizations with their own democratic structure, defined in accordance with the principles, objectives, strategy and statutes of Workers’ Alliance.
Any region or industry with at least three Workers’ Alliance members can form a basic body and appoint a delegate to the coordinating committee.
4.1 Industrial caucus
The industrial caucus is the main body of Workers’ Alliance, and aims to coordinate the strategy of militants in each industry to achieve the goal of a political strike. It is made up of Workers’ Alliance members in a specific industry.
The caucus holds a general meeting at least every six months. In between, the caucus divides into sub-committees based on specific tasks or work environments as required.
The caucus elects an executive committee responsible for organizing meetings, coordinating activities between meetings and coordinating the actions of the various committees.
4.2 The regional chapter
The regional chapter is the body responsible for coordinating the various Workers’ Alliance industrial caucuses in a city or region, conducting political campaigns and organizing educational activities. It is made up of Workers’ Alliance members in a given city or region.
The Chapter holds a general meeting at least every three months. The Chapter may divide into sub-committees as required.
The Chapter elects an Executive Committee responsible for organizing meetings, coordinating activities between meetings and coordinating the actions of the various committees.
5. Coordination committee
The Coordination Committee is responsible for organizing congresses, approving the creation of basic bodies, and ensure communication and coordination between Workers’ Alliance basic bodies.
Politically, the coordinating committee is responsible for putting forward national political campaigns, pooling resources and promoting unity of action.
The Workers’ Alliance coordinating committee is made up of one representative from every regional chapter, that is accountable to and recallable at all times.
6. Congress
The congress is the governing body of Workers’ Alliance. The coordinating committee elected at the previous congress is responsible for organizing the next congress.
All Workers’ Alliance basic bodies have the right to submit proposals to the congress. All Workers’ Alliance members have the right to participate in the congress and to debate, propose amendments and vote on proposals put forward by the bodies.
The congress must be held at least every two years.
