We, members of the Cégep de Saint-Laurent Student Association, fight for anti-capitalist, anti-fascist, environmentalist, feminist, and anti-racist demands. Strikes are an important means of applying pressure and mobilising, but they cannot be our members’ only form of political activity.

As in 1974–75 at United Aircraft, the current conflict at Metro raises the question of workers’ power. To wage successful strikes, we need to adopt a class-struggle perspective and build solidarity beyond our individual workplaces.

This text is the first in a new series, “The CFP Educates Us on…,” dedicated to the content of a session organized by the Centre de formation populaire [CFP]. The Centre de formation populaire is a joint initiative of the Montreal chapter of Workers’ Alliance and the Archives Révolutionnaires collective. The article recounts the events of the 1974 strike by maintenance workers at the Montreal transit authority. The conflict is a little-known example of a victorious struggle truly rooted in workers’ power—a source of inspiration for workers in our region!
